The Vulture Mine began in 1863 when Henry Wickenburg, a prospector from California’s gold rush, discovered a quartz outcropping containing gold. Shortly after the mine was established a small mining town was developed. It was called Vulture City. The town once had a population of several thousand citizens with amenities including a mess hall and post office. Wickenburg worked the mine by himself and began to sell the gold ore to other prospectors. He established an encampment which he named Wickenburg’s Ranch in 1866.

The Vulture Mine played an instrumental and pivotal role in the founding and development of the town of Wickenburg.

Today many of the attractions in Vulture City are being restored. With over 12 faithfully restored buildings and countless artifacts, a tour of the mine provides a glimpse of the mining culture and lifestyle in the American Southwest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors are invited to explore the heart of the once-booming mining town.
